Abstract: N-[4-(triethylammoniomethyl)benzoyl] caprolactam chloride (TBCC) and sodium percarbonate were incorporated into a standard laundry detergent for removing colored contaminants from textiles at room temperature. The TBCC-activated peroxide system was constructed by the reaction of TBCC with hydrogen peroxide generated from sodium percarbonate in aqueous solution. The white and dyed fabrics contaminated with coffee, red wine and tea were used to test the performance of the TBCC-activated peroxide system in removing colored contaminants. The test results of residual hydrogen peroxide indicate that the hydrogen peroxide released from sodium percarbonate can be adequately activated by TBCC.At room temperature, laundering with appropriate amount of TBCC and sodium percarbonate can effectively remove the colored contaminants not only from white fabrics for recovering their original whiteness but also from dyed fabrics without apparent damage to their original color appearance.
